In the final week of the 2014 session, state lawmakers passed a school transfer bill and sent it to Governor Nixon’s desk. SB 493, sponsored by State Senator David Pearce (R-Warrensburg), maps out several ways in which students can transfer out of unaccredited public schools to find better educational opportunities. In its final form the bill includes the option for students to attend private schools but only nonsectarian ones.
In a letter to legislators the MCC had urged parents also be given the opportunity to choose religious schools but this option was not included in the final bill. In its letter the MCC declared:
“Parents are the primary educators of their children. This is their God-given right and duty. If you are looking for direction, consider the dreams of these parents for their children. If you do this first, the practical solutions will fall in place.”
