Senate Approves Empowerment Scholarships

This week, the Missouri Senate gave first-round approval to legislation that would offer scholarships to help public school families transfer their special needs children to private schools. SB 313 is sponsored by Senator Andrew Koenig (R-St. Louis). The scholarships would also be available to foster children and children of military families.

The scholarships would only be provided if the state of Missouri fully funds the education formula that funds the state’s public schools. Right now, the state of Missouri does not fully fund the public school formula. If the state begins to fully fund the formula, then nonprofit educational assistance organizations could apply to the state treasurer to provide the scholarship help.

The bill still needs final approval by the Senate before it can be sent to the Missouri House for that body’s consideration.
