St. Lawrence, Martyr of Rome

Next Monday the Church celebrates the feast day of St. Lawrence, Martyr of Rome. Lawrence was a deacon of the Roman church killed in the persecutions of Valerian in 258. As the archdeacon he was responsible for protecting the “treasures” of the Church. When Roman officials asked him to turn over those treasures, Lawrence asked for a few days to collect them. He then brought forward the poor and lame of Rome and explained that these were the “treasures” of the Church. Lawrence was promptly killed, with some accounts indicating he was slowly burnt on glowing plates. See this St. Lawrence video for more.
