The Dollars and Sense of Expanding Medicaid

Earlier this year the Missouri Economic Research and Information Center (MERIC) issued a report on “The Economic Impact of Medicaid Expansion” which projects that expanding Medicaid would create 23,868 jobs over an eight-year period and spur $9.9 billion in new wages. The opportunity to jumpstart economic development led the Missouri Chamber of Commerce to support Medicaid expansion.  Meanwhile, legislators who pay attention to balancing the state budget saw an opportunity to transfer funding for some programs from state to federal dollars available under Medicaid. Healthcare providers supported Medicaid expansion as a way to address fiscal challenges faced by rural hospitals. All of these factors will still be in play next year. Stay tuned for more.
