U.S. House Votes to Make “Hyde Amendment” Permanent

The U.S. House of Representatives voted this week to pass the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act, which would ban federal funds being used to pay for abortions in federally-funded healthcare programs, including those offered through the Affordable Care Act.  The bill passed the House by a vote of 283-183. The bill faces challenges in the U.S. Senate, where there are not sufficient pro-life votes to prevent a filibuster. Making Hyde permanent, rather than an amendment that must be approved every year as part of the appropriations process, has been an elusive goal of pro-lifers for the last few decades.
