U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee Refers Planned Parenthood & Fetal Tissue Procurement Companies to FBI and DOJ

This week, the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee referred Planned Parenthood and several fetal tissue procurement companies to the FBI and the Justice Department for investigation and possible prosecution. The referral follows an investigation into the practice of commoditizing fetal remains from abortions.

Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) made the referral and stated, “I don’t take lightly making a criminal referral. But, the seeming disregard for the law by these entities has been fueled by decades of utter failure by the Justice Department to enforce it.” He went on to state, “unless there is a renewed commitment by everyone involved against commercializing the trade in aborted fetal body parts for profit, then the problem is likely to continue.”

The Committee recently released its report and findings based upon documents produced by Planned Parenthood and the procurement companies in question.  Among the findings was that three procurement companies “[h]ave paid Planned Parenthood Affiliates to acquire aborted fetuses, and subsequently sold the fetal tissue to their respective customers at substantially higher prices than their documented costs.” The full report, including a four page executive summary, can be reviewed here.
