The Vatican this week issued guidelines on cremation and burial. The guidelines provide that traditional burial is preferred, but that cremation is permitted. Scattering ashes, keeping cremated remains at home, or splitting up cremated remains is not permitted. Cremated remains should be kept in a sacred space, such as in a mausoleum or interned in the ground, so that the living faithful can visit and show their respects. The former practice of distributing relics of the bodies of saints is being discouraged. For more on the rationale for these guidelines, see this Crux article.
